I have been abundantly blessed with a neurodiverse child. I truly do consider this a gift. While working with the mind each day with various clients I have seen a whole new world open up within my own understanding, and training in regard to our minds ability and how we process the world around us. My son is my greatest teacher along with those professionals who I work alongside. I am empowered and excited to learn more as I go into the world of neurodiversity. As such I would like to make a personal statement with regard to the Autism Awareness Symbol.
The Autism Awareness Symbol is a hot topic in the autism world. I am choosing to weigh in on this issue. I am such a strong believer in we see "what we choose to see in life." So with that in mind, I personally see the puzzle piece as a metaphor for the beautiful weaving together of life neurodiverse individuals bring to our world. Those of us who are neurotypicals have so much to learn from neurodiverse individuals. I truly believe that it is only through seeing each individual (whether they are neurodiverse or neurotypical) as just that...their own unique colorful personality, characteristics, and way of life; that we can ever truly gain understanding, acceptance and inclusion.
So for our family, the puzzle piece isn't just about "Autism" it is a metaphor for all individuals. Our neurodiverse son has made the 'puzzle' of our family complete. "I Choose" to see the autism puzzle piece as a symbol of unique neurodiversity, abilities, and awareness for all beings. We all need to be more aware of our humanity in daily living with all humans regardless if they are neurodiverse and/or neurotypical.
